Pepper sprays are becoming widely popular as a means of personal self defense. Pepper sprays are typically small, easily concealable and highly effective means of personal protection.
Pepper spray (aka: OC Spray, OC Gas, Capsicum Spray or Oleoresin Capsicum) is manufactured by milling chili peppers into a finely ground paste, then a solvent is used to extract the capsaicin which is then dried into a wax like substance known as Oleresin Capsicum. Adding inert ingredients such as water, and then pressuring into a dispenser is how we derive modern day pepper sprays.
Pepper sprays are rated in regards to how hot they are by Scoville Heat Units (SHU). With SHU ratings up to 2 Million Scoville Heat Units, pepper sprays, when sprayed in the eyes or soft tissue areas such as the face, cause an individuals eyes to shut and water uncontrollably. Burning and irritation of the soft tissue areas of the face combined with the pain and tearing in the eyes, make pepper spray a very effective means of personal defense against an attacker.
